When choosing a GPS tracker for your vehicle, one of the first decisions you'll face is whether to go with an OBD-II plug-in device or a hardwired tracker. Both have real advantages — the right choice depends on your vehicle type, security needs, and how you plan to use the data.

OBD-II Trackers (ZT-100 Basic)

OBD-II (On-Board Diagnostics) trackers plug directly into the diagnostic port found under the dashboard of most modern vehicles (manufactured after 2000). No wiring is involved — installation takes under 5 minutes and can be self-installed or installed by our technician.

Advantages: Quick installation, easily transferable between vehicles, no wiring required, lower upfront cost, ideal for personal vehicles and short-term tracking needs.

Disadvantages: Visible in the vehicle — anyone who knows about OBD ports can unplug it. No battery tamper detection. Cannot support features like remote engine cut-off (requires hardwired connection to ignition system). Less suitable for fleet security.

Hardwired Trackers (ZT-200 Pro, ZT-300 Voice)

Hardwired devices are professionally connected to the vehicle's electrical system — typically tapping into the ignition wire, a constant power source, and ground. They're installed behind the dashboard, under the seat, or in another concealed location, making them virtually impossible to detect or remove without specialist knowledge.

Advantages: Fully hidden and tamper-resistant, battery tamper detection, supports remote engine cut-off, no OBD port required (works in older vehicles, trucks, and commercial vehicles), more reliable power supply, suitable for fleet security and high-value vehicles.

Disadvantages: Professional installation required (included free with Z Track), not easily transferable between vehicles, higher upfront cost.

Our Recommendation

For personal vehicles where convenience is the priority: OBD-II (ZT-100). For business fleets, commercial vehicles, or any situation where security and full feature access matter: hardwired (ZT-200 Pro). For fleet managers who need voice communication with drivers: ZT-300 Voice.
